Becoming a Wreck Camp Staff Member

About Wreck Camp:

Wreck Camp is an extended orientation experience that brings together new and current students to jumpstart their college experience in a fun summer-camp setting. Wreck Camp programs are designed to aid students in their transition to Georgia Tech by developing a diverse social network and strengthening their ties to the Institute through a combination of fun activities. Students leave all camp programs prepared to be an engaged member of our campus community.

Qualified Applicants must:

The primary role of a Wreck Camp staff member is to provide guidance to incoming students and assist in the facilitation of Wreck Camp events and activities. The position of Wreck Camp staff member requires a great deal of dedication and love for Georgia Tech. As representatives of The Georgia Institute of Technology, Wreck Camp staff members are expected to positively represent themselves, Wreck Camp, New Student & Transition Programs, and Tech. The minimum expectations and responsibilities for staff members include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending and actively participating in training.

  • Working as a team with other Wreck Camp staff members, FASET Directors, NSTP Professional Staff, and any GT staff and faculty.

  • Participating and assisting with the organization, planning, and implementation of Wreck Camp throughout the summer. 

  • Facilitating group discussions over issues that new students may face during their transition to college.

  • Attending additional meetings to assist with the planning of Wreck Camp during the summer.

  • If a student is chosen to return to the Wreck Camp staff, they are also expected to provide guidance and share previous experience with new staff members, lead a sub-committee that will be advised by the Directors, and assist with the mentoring and group building of their respective Color Teams.

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for Wreck Camp staff members include:

  • Good academic standing, with a required cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above

  • Good judicial standing with no outstanding judicial sanctions

  • Will be enrolled as an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech at least one additional semester following the summer they are a Wreck Camp staff member

  • Understand and support the purpose of the New Student & Transition Programs office, Wreck Camp, and the mission of Georgia Tech

  • Demonstrate the ability to be reliable, responsible, flexible, and willing to help

  • Demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of team members, students, GT faculty and staff.

  • Demonstrate a desire to learn about Georgia Tech and help others learn about GT and how to be a successful Georgia Tech student

  • Demonstrate pride of Georgia Tech and the willingness to share said pride with incoming students and families

  • Wreck Camp staff member socials will be held throughout the summer and are optional

  • Must be present and on time to all training sessions, workdays, and Wreck Camp sessions (unless cleared by NSTP Professional Staff)

Additional Information

Working/Classes During the Summer

Wreck Camp staff members are required to work Wreck Camp Odyssey (August 5-8, 2020) and either Wreck Camp iGniTe (June 12-14, 2020) or Wreck Camp ATL (July 10-12). Although Wreck Camp staff members are required to be present at all training sessions, work days, and two Wreck Camps (unless authorized prior), NSTP supports any student who decides to enroll in classes or be employed on or off-campus. However, all staff members must communicate the required dates to their employers and have a written and supervisor approved plan to balance both their job and their Wreck Camp requirements.
 

Study Abroad

Students who are studying abroad during the Spring Semester may be eligible to apply to be a Wreck Camp staff member. To confirm you are eligible to apply to be a Wreck Camp staff member, please email transitionprograms@studentlife.gatech.edu with the name of your program and your dates of travel. Additionally, students who have been a staff member during previous years, may reach out and be put on a waitlist if space becomes available.

Information Sessions

Applicants should/are encouraged to attend one of our Information Sessions to learn more about the Wreck Camp staff experience, meet the New Student & Transition Programs professional staff, and hear from previous staff members.

Application Process 

  1. Complete and submit an application online by Friday, January 31, 2020 by midnight.
  2. Upon turning in your application, you will receive instructions for filling out your required online profile. Please complete this profile by Wednesday, February 5th.
  3. Applicants will be notified via e-mail if they received an interview by Tuesday, February 11th.
  4. Interview sign-ups will be available online February 11th-16th on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  5. Individual interviews will be held from Monday, February 17th – Thursday, February 20th from 7pm-11pm.
  6. Group interviews will be held on Wednesday, February 26th from 5pm-11pm and Thursday, February 27th from 5pm-11pm.
  7. Applicants will be notified of the final selections on Monday, March 2nd.
